Scores

96 / 100

"Dark cherry, plum, smoke, menthol, melted road tar and graphite meld together in the 2010 Barolo San Rocco. A big, explosive wine, the 2010 blossoms in the glass with layers of deep, expressive fruit. The San Rocco is usually a wine of volume and breadth, at it is again in 2010. The firm Serralunga tannins are present, but they are also beautifully balanced. I can't wait to see how the 2010 develops. Today, the San Rocco is young, young, young."

95 / 100

"The bouquet is mellow, developed and complex, showing some maturity - caramel, meaty, ripe and nicely harmonised. Oak is apparent. The palate is tight and firm, dense and compact, still a little closed and young. Milk chocolate. Fairly oak-driven. Very young and unevolved. Forward perhaps, but it still needs time."

"Aromas of blueberries and spices with hints of flowers. Full body with silky tannins and a fresh finish. Refined and pretty. Needs two or three years to soften."
- James Suckling

93 / 100

"Vines in the San Rocco vineyard are 50 to 55 years old and have deep root systems that can withstand extreme weather. Azelia purchased this parcel in Serralunga d'Alba in 1992. The 2010 Barolo San Rocco is a wine of immense power and structure. It also shows impressive elegance and finesse, so you really get the best that Nebbiolo can offer. The bouquet opens to dark fruit, with anise seed, licorice, toasted almond and blue flower in supporting roles."

92 / 100

"A modern style, offering vanilla and spice accents to the core of cherry flavors. Dense and firm on the finish, where menthol and resin notes prevail. Best from 2017 through 2028."
- Wine Spectator

Tasting Notes

Azelia is a 40-acre estate in Castiglione Falletto, in Langhe. It dates to 1920 when Lorenzo Scavino began making wine from the family vineyards. Today the fifth generation of the Scavino family owns and operates the estate, which produces about 80,000 bottles a year. Azelia is best known for its Barolos, which often earn 3 bicchieri, the highest ratings possible from Gambero Rosso, the Italian wine journal.
