"Great site, lovingly (biodynamically) tended. Idiosyncratic and original, expressive wines (in the best possible sense). Syrah from here is always really savoury and typically really compelling, ‘un-Australian’ in its earth and bloody/gamey characters, broad, savoury weave of tannins, and there’s no disappointment here. A stellar release, loaded with perfume, all pot pourri, undergrowth, black pepper, crushed rock and some raspberry and plummy notes in there too. The palate reflects the bouquet well, medium weight here, supple in texture but those tannins, lacy, chalky, faintly tarry in that way of nebbiolo, do a wonderful job of shape, form and keeping things fresh and long with each sip. It’s really beautiful syrah, delicious from the get-go but weaving in so much detail and interest. A humdinger from 2016. Drink 2020 - 2032."

"Even with a few years under its belt, the colour, indeed the wine, is bright and youthful. Deep, dark and penetrating, it's vibrant and lively, even energising. Full of dark fruit, gun flint, coffee grounds and eucalyptus. While the tannins hold sway, they are textural, savoury and giving. A lovely wine."

"Nose has blood, vegetable broth and poached plums. The palate carries those same dark fruits on entry, morphing into a savoury mouthful of spiced boudin noir and crushed-shells. Beautiful flow and line. Whilst having intensity and drive from tannins, the overall feeling is one of lift and air."

Tasting Notes

This stunning Syrah comes from the singular Cobaw Ridge Estate, the only biodynamically farmed vineyard in the Macedon Ranges.

This high-altitude site sits around 600m above sea level, yielding Syrah imbued with floral aromatics and spicy flavour profile.

The fruit is always impeccable when it enters the winery, every effort taken in the vineyard by the Coopers to ensure little needs to be done in the winery to get en expression of their vineyard in bottle.

This is natural wine made as fine wine. One of Victoria's most unique expressions of Syrah/Shiraz that will mature beautifully for years to come.
