96-94 / 100"The 2022 Mâcon-Pierreclos Juliette et les Vieilles de Chavigne is a worthy new entry in the series 2016, 2018 and 2020, though where exactly it will sit among those titans will be easier to assess in bottle than it is in barrel. Unfurling in the glass with aromas of white flowers, citrus zest, Asian pear, peach, nutmeg and bread dough, it's full-bodied, satiny and incisive, with huge levels of concentration, racy acids and a long, saline finish."

"This riveting wine boasts aromas of Williams pear and quince with accents of lemon zest, ginger and hay. The texture is concentrated, almost tannic, and long, but balanced by an astonishing freshness. The grapes come from two parcels of low-yielding vines (one very old, one planted in 2003) at the top of the slope. The wine is not made every year, but when it is it's fermented in cask (almost 40% new) and gives one of the most distinctive wines of the Mâconnais."

Tasting Notes
After 2016, 2018 and 2020, this is the fourth release of Guffens’s latest masterpiece, Mâcon-Pierreclos Juliette et les Vieilles de Chavigne. “For many years, I have wanted to produce a cuvée from the parcel of vines that I call Juliette,” says Guffens. Planted in 2003, the vines are rooted in such poor, stony soil that even Guffens wonders how they manage to grow. With the baby vines stunted by the 2003 heatwave, these plants produce intense yields with soaring, concentrated acidity. Guffens then blends in a barrel or two of juice from his oldest vines from the Chavigne terroir, which today number in the 80- to 90-year-old range. Matured for 18 months in barrel, the result is a stunning, freak wine of incredible depth and deliciousness. A brilliant wine that could only come from Jean-Marie Guffens!
