James Halliday Wine Companion 2025 Wine Of The Year

Scores

98 / 100

"Chardonnay of the Year and Wine of the Year. From the Funder and Diamond vineyard, planted in Wandin East with the P58 clone in 1990. Hand picked and whole-bunch pressed to French puncheons (20% new) for fermentation and 10 months' maturation before another six months in tank. Very bright. Aromas of stone fruits and lemon verbena together with some struck match, oyster shells and a little gently toasted hazelnut. There's a wonderful purity of fruit, too, on the superbly balanced, silken textured and tensile palate. At the risk of repeating myself, this is ‘grand cru’ quality Australian chardonnay but at a fraction of the price."

Tasting Notes

Our 864 range features exceptional wines from specific and single blocks, produced in small quantities and released in only the best years. An Oakridge 864 wine is terroir-driven. Made to demonstrate the importance of time and place with every bottle, and always a tribute to tradition, these wines are ready to drink now or cellar.

Light straw with green hues. Fresh and vibrant. Complex and intense. Orchard fruit - peach and nectarine, dried apricot and pear, light herbal nuance and flint all laced together with notes of cordite and burnt match. The palate is ripe, round, expressive and dense. Concentrated flavours that are richly mouth filling, without any flabbiness or lack of line. The citric laced acidity, the toothsome river stone texture carrying the flavours and balancing the structure to a crescendo that lasts minutes. One of the very good 864s.
