94 / 100"Sourced from a vineyard next to Giaconda, a higher cropping site, conventional farmed, says Keppel Smith. A little struck match, grapefruit, stonefruit, and oatmeal richness, fine spicy oak, Japanese ginger. Juicy but tight, has somecreamy gloss and richness, but acidity gives it grapefruity tang and freshness, finishes quite long and spicy. A really good glass of Chardonnay here. Satisfying. Pleasurable. Excellent."

"A fleshier cousin to the upper echelon wine and better placed for early to mid-term drinking as a result. Canned stone fruit accents, lees-derived truffle, canned corn and a dried straw character confer a welcome savoriness to teeming stone fruit accents. This is the wine to reach for while waiting for its more expensive sibling to unravel in the cellar. The cadence is a little more relaxed. Drink or hold. Screw cap."

Tasting Notes
Comments from Winemaker Keppell Smith:
When we have fruit from our younger vines or when rare parcels of particularly outstanding Beechworth grapes become available, our winemaker Keppell Smith likes to create something unique and bottle it under Savaterre's ' Frère Cadet' (Younger Brother) label.
The 2022 Frère Cadet is made from Beechworth chardonnay we are lucky enough to buy from some talented vignerons. It’s ready to go! A beautiful wine that is complex and elegant. Power and subtlety all interwoven into a perfect structure. Intensity of aroma and flavour combined with great length and texture. This is a wine that over delivers. It’s ready to drink and will continue to improve.
The Frère Cadet range of wines evolved to be more accessible in their youth. These wines are created with the same attention to detail that goes into our premium Savaterre label but are more giving when young. All grapes are handpicked and fermented by indigenous yeasts.
