96 / 100"From a vineyard planted around 1985, neighbouring the famous railway line between Coonawarra and Penola, maturation was for almost two years in French oak, 30% new. For me, one of the stars of this year’s releases and certainly, hands down, the top value offering. Shades of opaque purple, this is still very young, though absolutely gorgeous. Approachable, with spicy notes, mulberries, cassis, blackberries, mint and tobacco leaves – a really impressive example of Coonawarra supported by firm and abundant tannins, impeccable balance and a fine lingering finish with the intensity maintained throughout. A stunning Coonawarra Cabernet which will drink beautifully over the next decade or two. Wines like this would make [x ]very proud of what his family is achieving."

"Varietally pure and immediately enticing, the bouquet shows cassis, subtle tobacco, smoked game, toasted nut and rich floral notes on the nose, leading to a wonderfully weighted palate offering richly textured mouthfeel backed by fine grainy tannins. Robust and generous with loads of delectable flavours. At its best: now to 2036."

Tasting Notes
Coonawarra is nestled in the heart of the Limestone Coast of South Australia. The unique cigar-shaped strip of rich terra rossa soil that defines the region is a one-of-a-kind narrow ridge of earth, just 27 kilometres long and two km wide, is known for producing incomparable red wines – in particular, Cabernet Sauvignon.
The Coonawarra's Terra Rossa soil is one if not the most famous soil types in Australia. A million years in the making, this long, narrow ridge of iron-rich limestone is one of the most unique soil types on the planet. Combined with cool nights and a long, mild gropwing season and there's no surprise this is one of the Southern Hemisphere's premier wine regions!
Producing the Quintessential Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon was one of this persons life-long endeavours. His drive, passion and endless pursuit for quality were the enduring attributes to which we all aspire.
His legacy can be seen in each of the wines as they strive to achieve a perfect balance of varietal and regional intensity, but with an elegance and charm which invite and entice the drinker to enjoy a second glass.
The fruit from the 2021 vintage was fermented on skins and pumped over twice daily to ensure maximum extraction of colour and flavour. The wine was then pressed off while still slightly sweet and pumped to new and used oak barrels to complete primary and malo-lactic fermentation. On completion of primary and malo-lactic fermentation the wine was racked off lees and then transferred back to refreshed wood for 18 months of final barrel maturation in a mixture of new (30%) and second shave fine-grained French oak.
