91 / 100"Pretty aromas include those of red cherry that are laced with spice and floral hints. The detailed and markedly energetic middleweight flavors terminate in a youthfully austere finish that leans out somewhat as it sits on the palate. I suspect that this will round out with bottle age and my range offers the benefit of the doubt."

"Half a crop, 6 barrels made. Once again this is paler in colour. A pretty elegant bouquet, à la Volnay. Not huge in volume, a bit of strawberry, just enough fruit to reach the back, but one of the more delicate wines of the vintage, albeit persistent."

Tasting Notes
Les Mitans is celebrated as one of the most refined and cerebral expressions of Volnay, exemplified by Leroux's elegant 2021 vintage. The term 'Mitans,' derived from old French for center, aptly describes this Cru's central location within the appellation, nestled beneath the village on the slopes. Leroux's 0.65-hectare plot is situated near the Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Barre and extends into the Mitans l'Ormeau lieu-dit. The soil, a blend of fine clay and limestone, coupled with 50-year-old vines, contributes to the wine's unique character. A subtle use of whole bunch adds nuance to the winemaking process this year.
Widely acknowledged as one of the most graceful and delicately structured expressions of Volnay, Leroux's 2021 Les Mitans lives up to this reputation. Its pale color and elegantly fragrant bouquet, reminiscent of Volnay, offer a modest volume with notes of strawberry, providing just enough fruit to linger on the palate. Despite being one of the more delicate wines of the vintage, its persistence is noteworthy.
The unique terroir of Les Mitans, with its limestone-infused clay soil and the influence of Leroux's winemaking expertise, shines through in this limited production of only 6 barrels, representing half a crop. The wine's finesse and potential for evolution make it a noteworthy addition to Leroux's portfolio and a testament to the distinctive character of Volnay's Les Mitans.
