96 / 100"The 2014 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru Cuvée des Merles has a precise, almost pixelated, limestone-infused bouquet that blossoms in the glass with its vibrant red cherries, strawberry and bergamot scents. The palate is medium-bodied with very supple tannin. The acidity here is very well judged, smooth and silky in the mouth, extremely pure with stupendous precision on the long finish. It is the kind of Charmes-Chambertin that you instantly fall in love with. Beautiful...just beautiful."

"A cool, pure and exceptionally spicy nose of red berries and earth is trimmed in a deft touch of wood. The rich, concentrated and caressing middle weight flavors immediately tighten up on the robust, powerful and impressively persistent finish."

"The 2014 Charmes-Chambertin “Cuvée de Merle” from Domaine Ponsot shows off a nicely reserved personality as well out of the blocks, but with plenty of depth and dimension lying in wait. The bouquet is a classic blend of cherries, beetroot, grilled meats, mustard seed, dark soil tones and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and still quite primary, with a fine core, very good balance and grip, fine-grained tannins and a long, reserved and classy finish. This will be a lovely example"

Tasting Notes
Domaine Ponsot’s cellar sits atop the hill overlooking the vineyards of Morey-St-Denis, with views stretching the length of the Côte de Nuits. They are one of the, if not the, defining domaines of the village, and the largest landowners in the hallowed terroir of Clos de la Roche Grand Cru, with over three hectares.
They also proudly lay claim to the only premier cru Aligoté in Burgundy, with Clos des Monts Luisants responsible for a remarkable white with uniquely delicious flavours and a loyal following.
The estate has been in the Ponsot family since 1872, when William Ponsot settled in Morey-St-Denis and bought up land including their only Chardonnay parcel, the premier cru Clos des Monts Luisants. Laurent Ponsot brought the estate to fame, with his flare for producing distinctive wines that broke the mould. His departure in 2017 saw the domaine transferred to the safe hands of his sister, Rose-Marie, and her nephew William and the appointment of régisseur, Alexandre Abel.
