Scores

97 / 100

"A 52/48% blend, 135 dozen made from the 41-year-old terraced vineyards of the Hickinbotham Vineyard, vinified separately, with 18 months in oak. The colour is magnificently deep, but vivid, purple-crimson, the bouquet exuding black fruits, the full-bodied palate with perfectly weighted fruit, oak and tannins, the length prodigious. Salut."

96 / 100

"Very deep, dense, purple/red colour and a walnutty, oaky bouquet, with a tinge of spice and some pencil-shavings notes as well. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated in flavour, with attack and grip and searing, penetrating intensity. Serious depth and power here. It lingers on and on. A most impressive glass of red, tremendously deep and penetrative and long."

Tasting Notes

The Hickinbotham Clarendon Vineyard covers a steep cut of country from the ridgetops above the village of Clarendon to the Onkaparinga River in the gorge below. Alan Hickinbotham planted these vines in 1971, inspired by the visionary Edward John Peake who developed a famous vineyard here in the 1860’s. Peake was a winemaker, designer, farmer, painter, miner, Gothic architecture revivalist, railway director and lover of Cabernet and Shiraz. He was the type who gave this fledgeling colony its spirit. We trust this, our best wine, will keep his memory alive.
