96 / 100"Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon’s ability to age gracefully is remarkable. This Leconfield is testimony to that. It has the classic cassis and cigar notes blended with complex dustiness with ubtle chocolate powder aromas emerging once fully open. On the palate the wine is full of life, generous ripe blueberry and plum, giving a deeply flavoured, finely textured finish. The tannins are polished and well defined. It presents an impressive layered middle palate, invoking memories of black forest gateaux. To match, I went all out on the barbecue and prepared a rib on the bone, lamb cutlets and loin, South American chorizo, roasted potatoes, pebre, celery & radish – what an amazing contrast to savour. The interactions it provoked with beef versus lamb was intriguing. The latter synced more and enhanced the flavour of the meat — elevating the sensorial experience. The beef however, was nowhere near as pronounced. This is a terrific wine displaying both concentration and elegance showing at peak drinking now."

Tasting Notes
Superb opaque black purple colour with deep dark purple black hue. Expressive aromas of ripe blackcurrant interspersed with mulberry arise from the glass followed by some cedary tobacco, light dark chocolate and spice. Medium to full bodied the palate has classical Cabernet Sauvignon structure with an elegant tight mouthfeel and flavours of blackcurrant and mulberry over some cedar, light tobacco and spice. Dry finish with assertive but fine grained tannins. Aftertaste of blackcurrant, cedar, light cigar box and spice.
Sydney Hamilton purchased Leconfield in 1974, having worked in the family wine business for over 30 years he eventually sold the winery to his nephew in 81. Richard has continued producing fantastic south austrlian wines.
