96 / 100"This has long been one of my favourite Cabernets from Coonawarra and this vintage will do nothing but enhance that. It is also, every year, one of the great bargains to be found anywhere. The wine spends time maturing in French oak. A black purple hue, this is beautifully worked, intense and yet elegant. Blackberries, tobacco leaves, cassis, hints of cigar boxes – think Cohiba Robusto. Gorgeously fragrant, there are also notes of bergamot and florals. Juicy acidity runs the full journey, to an extremely long finish with the silkiest of tannins. It is immaculately balanced from start to finish. Tightly woven, this is a classic and cracking Coonawarra Cabernet. Wonderful drinking now, but it is also a ten to fifteen year proposition. Not that I am suggesting they raise the price, but to be honest, it is almost an insult to a wonderful wine."

"The elegant style and perfumes of Coonawarra all come into play in this very good Cabernet from a very good year. Lift of red berry and mint. The colour is brilliant and bright and points to its medium-bodied structure. But there is power here. Excellent combination of chalky tannins and fine-grained oak harnesses the fruit into a controlled long palate. These wines are just getting better and better."

"Concentrated, glass-staining purple colour; a bouquet of concentrated, bold and bright cassis cabernet fruit, the same powerful depth of flavour apparent in the mouth allied with lavish tannins. An impressive wine with some wow factor. It needs more time and will be long lived. 17 Jan 2023"

Tasting Notes
Nose:
Fragrant, ripe cassis and blackberry nose enhance with cedar and cinnamon through French oak maturation. This is a wonderful example varietal Cabernet Sauvignon.
Palate:
Medium to full bodied with great persistence of flavour and retains the elegance expected of high quality Coonawarra reds. Tannins are textured, silky and long and the finish is clean and bright.
Cellaring:
The wine will have immediate appeal yet reward a decade or more of cellaring to achieve secondary complexity of cedar and black truffles.
Background:
Leconfield Cabernet Sauvignon has been the flagship of Leconfield since the first release in 1977. Our philosophy is to produce a Cabernet Sauvignon displaying both depth and elegance where oak complexes and enhances the fruit but is not allowed to dominate. Leconfield is situated in the heart of Australia’s famous Coonawarra with its rich Terra Rosa soil over limestone providing the ideal environment for growing premium Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard was founded in 1974 by pioneering oenologist Sydney Hamilton who at 76 years of age had the ambition to produce the classic Australian red wine. Time has validated his choice of Coonawarra as a fantastic place to do just that. Today the estate remains a family wine business owned by Dr Richard and Jette Hamilton and is planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller patches of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Shiraz, Petit Verdot and complemented with the white varieties of Riesling and Chardonnay. The Hamilton family have been growing grapes and wine in South Australia since 1837.
