Tasting Notes
Yoshiaki and Kyoko Sato have been making wine in NZ’s Central Otago since moving there from Tokyo in 2006. Starting out at Felton Rd, Yoshiaki subsequently became winemaker at neighbouring Mt Edward and Kyoko continued to be vineyard supervisor at Felton Rd until 2018 when they both decided to focus full time on their own wines. Starting with their first Sato release in 2009 they have established a well deserved cult following in NZ, Australia and beyond. Since 2016 they have farmed their own plot under Mt Pisa, La Ferme de Sato, with 2019 the first release from this property, and another chapter in what will no doubt be an exciting journey.

Scores
95 / 100"This is the first year of 60% whole berry fermentation. Very floral with white pepper and it evolves beautifully. Medium body with fine tannins. Orange peel. Dried spices. Silky and caressing in the finish. A more opened and alluring gamay from here. Hand-bottled. Drink or hold"

"Wines under La Ferme de Sato come from Pisa Vineyard, organically grown by Yoshiaki and Koyoko Sato. Ambient yeast, 40% whole bunch, old French oak. Importer: Principal Wine Pure raspberry and cherry kernel. So smooth, so slippery with cascading feathery tannins. The texture is such a highlight here and you can ‘see’ a common thread in the texture of all Sato wines, it’s a signature. Going forward, it has a blood orange lift, orange oil, herbaceousness, salty meatiness and black sesame bitterness throughout but finishes on a succulent acidity pitch. So, so fine and detailed. Stunner of a Gamay. - The Wine Front"
