Tasting Notes

Stefano di Blasi passion for winemaking is primarily founded by his love of nature, followed by the creative aspect wine enables. He graduated from the University of Florence in 1995 and joined the Research and Development winemaking team of Marchesi Antinori in 1997 to create what would become two of the world’s most iconic wines; Tignanello and Solaia. This first vintage, 1997, of Solaia was the first Italian wine ever to achieve number 1 place in Wine Spectator Top 100.

Australia holds a special place in Stefano’s heart as he advanced his learnings at Antinori working with an Australian winemaker, Michael Symons. Then, in 2000, he worked alongside Brian Croser at Petaluma and Peter Gago at Magill Estate, always fine tuning his artistic approach.

Between 2007-2011 Stefano was responsible for one of the most important research programmes on Sangiovese in Tuscany, the ‘Consorzio Tuscania’.

Today, Stefano is fortunate enough to afford himself the time to make great wine accessible to a wider audience, all the while preserving his integrity and love for the art of winemaking.

Stefano works closely with various growers in Abruzzo which enables him to single out the best plots for making this full bodied and smooth red wine. The ambition is always to make a wine for the people and here he has focussed on expression of dark berried fruit character with velvety tannins. Smooth and easy, as the best Montepulciano should be.

Scores

"Montepulciano 2023 - Round and soft mouthfeel, wonderfully fresh blackberry, bright and crisp and, given the price, remarkably long in flavour. Very clear this is a wine made by someone that knows what they’re doing. Pour this in a jug and pair with any kind of food - this is what the Italians do best."

"A variety that is beginning to find a home in Australia, but this is the real deal from Abruzzo in Italy. Medium weight with bright red fruits supplemented with a slight chalk dusty character. So smooth and vibrant with dark cherry and plummy characters supported by supple tannins and neatly weighted oak. Love this style."

"A delicious Montepulciano, highlighting the joy that Sangiovese can offer. Deep purple in colour, the nose offers rose petals, chocolate, florals, dried herbs and spices. This wine is richly flavoured, exhibiting good extract with very good length and firm, supple tannins. Easy drinking, but with good quality fruit flavours throughout, this will provide plenty of pleasure over the next four to six years."
