Scores

95 / 100

"What a beautiful peachy nose this Pettenthal GG has, also hints of pineapple chutney and flint. Complex interplay of yeasty, mineral and wild herb elements on the juicy and exciting palate. Excellent length and aging potential. Drinkable now, but best from 2025."

94 / 100

"The 2022 Pettenthal Riesling GG is deep, pure and mineral on the stony/iodine-scented rather than fruity nose that reveals herbal and crunchy terroir aromas as well as concentrated fruit. Silky, refined and saline on the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied, dense, pure and very elegant, still discreet but substantial and saline Pettenthal. It doesn't show its true class today but has serious talent and a substantial, very long finish. 12% stated alcohol. Diam cork. Tasted at the domaine in October 2023. 94 Points."

Tasting Notes

Niersteiner ‘Pettenthal’: Approx. 6.5 ha with southeast orientation; curves into a cooler, shaded side valley; weathered, gravelly red slate. Shaped by this cooler exposition, Pettenthal is known for delicate wines with a lively acidity. Tending towards the fresh and aromatic in youth, these wines develop a fine creaminess and complex fruit as they mature.

Beyond the southern end of the Rothenberg Vineyard is the well-known Pettenthal grand cru site. The soil of this famous vineyard is also comprised of red shale, but here it's slightly more weathered. The extremely friable, in certain parcels even sandy, texture yields wine of lighter structure with vibrant elegance. Despite the vineyard’s proximity to the Rothenberg, the two resulting wines differ greatly. The wines of the Pettenthal are distinguished by exotic fruit aromas from the moment of their youth and retain their refreshing character for many years. The steepest parcels of Gunderloch's estate are located in this vineyard.
