98 / 100"The 2021 Romanée-Conti Grand Cru is the most integrated and complex—that's to say, hard to describe—wine in the range. Wafting from the glass with scents of sweet red berries, exotic spices, espresso roast, rose petals and violets, with only subtle hints of the coniferous bass-notes that mark out many of the other cuvées this year, it's full-bodied, pure and seamless, with an exquisitely suave, harmonious palate that effortless integrates vibrant acids, melting tannins and intense retronasal perfume. Concluding with a mouthwateringly saline finish, this is a wine that will delight, even enchant, Burgundy purists. - William Kelley"

"Curiously, the colour is noticeable lighter. The bouquet however leads with the ethereal, before growing rather more solid, even with a burnt toast character for a moment. Actually, the wood shows at the very finish, toughening up the tannins. This is temporary because the whole weight of fruit will surely swamp the barrel aspect. Normally I find Romanée-Conti easier to read than La Tâche, but that’s not the case today. Only with a considerable time in the glass does the intensity of the fruit start to unwind. There are cherries, there are raspberries, less strawberry and this is much more about the pure intensity of the fruit than anything floral. The barrel begins to calm down, and the initial torrefaction is more likely due to reduction than barrel toast. Assuming this element resolves, the 2021 La Romanée-Conti should gain in stature and match the beauty of La Tâche. Drink from 2035-2050+."
