Scores

95 / 100

"From down the (Felton) Road in Bannockburn. This has a bit of get up and go. More energy than its 2021 stablemates, this is a wine with fine, graphite tannins, succulent, dark cherry fruit character, brined black olive notes, fennel and clove complexity. It sits succulent and low in the palate, medium weight, tight and precise. Serious feeling, needing time to unfurl and good cellaring potential."

"A very vibrant and ripe Calvert with attractively spicy oak integration, as well as abundant red and dark cherries. Super fragrant. The palate is so silky and plush, packed with concentrated, fresh red-cherry flavor. Blueberry finish. Drink or hold."
- James Suckling

95 / 100

"The 2021 Calvert Pinot Noir leads with pomegranate and strawberry, rosehip and crushed walnuts. This is a spicy wine with lashings of black tea, fine tannins, pliable structure and an effortless flow of fruit in the mouth. Everything feels perfectly judged. I love the freshness of the acidity; it leaves the feeling in the mouth on an uptick. A flourish. It's good. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap."

Tasting Notes

Felton Road wines is located in Bannockburn, Central Otago in New Zealand, the most southerly wine growing region in the World. Here, vineyards are nestled into small macroclimates totally surrounded by high mountains, many of which are snowcapped all year round. Though the location is on the edge of sustainable viticulture these macroclimates consistently combine hot days, cool nights and long dry autumns. The latitude of 45 degrees south is similar to the Willamette Valley in Oregon and some of the finest wine regions of France.

"Both of Felton Road's Pinot Noirs are breakthrough efforts in New Zealand, and compete with the finest wines being made in California, Oregon and Burgundy's Cote D'Or. The Wine Advocate; Robert Parker
