95 / 100"(Abel Clone) The Abel clone, smuggled from a particularly significant vineyard in Burgundy is distinctive both in the vineyard and in the glass. Potent in its deep balsamic notes, prune plums and beetroot earthiness. Lingonberry, Acai, and dark chocolate. Seductive, mysterious, and enticing. The flavour here is compact and deep, with succulent acidity and firm, dry and velvety tannins. An ambery note on the finish, it’s a complete wine that over delivers. Serve with a blackened chargrilled steak with red wine jus. Will cellar 3-5 years."

"(114/115 Clone) By reputation the Dijon clones 114/115 widely used for their perfume and structure transports well here. Dark ruby with purple tones. A waft of hibiscus, lilac and subtle lavender is countered by Bing cherries, prune plums and whole black cardamom pods. Brooding allspice, black pepper and cedar. The palate is yielding and gentle with dusty tannins and a sultry wash over the tongue. The wine feels juicy with acidity, quite pulpy and even flowing. It’s a Pinot Noir for lunchtime with cold cut meats and good bread and butter. Drink now."

"(D5V12 Clone) The UC Davis origin clone is also known in Australia for its droopy growing structure. It has had a good run in many plantings throughout the country. Here we get a mix of sweet red strawberries, wild tulip with rhubarb, redcurrants, blackberry, and blood plums. Acidity is elevated and lifts the wine to showcase purple florals and a fleshy medium bodied weight. A wealth of grape tannins and hints of cocoa bean and vanilla spice. It’s rich in substance and longevity. Drinking well now and will cellar 3-5 years. A lovely pairing would be authentic bean tamales with a mole sauce."

"(MV6 Clone) Lilac, sweet pea blossom and mulberry. Boysenberry, red cherry and goji. A bazaar of spices with dried cumin, paprika and ground coriander. Tanned leather and white pepper, a zing of sumac and pepperberry. Acidity drives the wine without peaking, tannins are gritty but even across the palate. Red bean, caraway, and rye. It’s savoury and meaty with the impressive staying power of great long lived Pinot Noirs. Beautifully balanced, serve this with pink game meats and sauteed mushrooms."

"(667 Clone) High tones from the generous and compact clusters of 667. Black raspberry, bramble and dark cherries. Gala apple skin, red licorice and pomegranate. Heady spices of sweet paprika, mace and allspice. Acidity is sappy and makes its presence known with a lovely pull of fine grained tannins. Big boned skeletal structure holds up the exotic fruit and spice. It’s working hard, this clone, and pulling more than its weight. A moreish, addictive drink that would look beautiful alongside medium rare lamb with garlic and fresh herbs. Drink now and will cellar well for the next 3-5 years."

Pinot Noir is one of the grape varieties that has a very diverse range of clones and each clone with its different “personality traits” as such. Differentiated by berry sizes and bunch sizes and the amount of vigor the vines grow but most important of all the flavor profile each clone brings to life. Each with its very own nose and palate structure!
The deep dive into Pinot Noir clones!
*All wines below produced from 2023 vintage and 100% Estate grown fruit.
D5V12
This clone is a work horse and produces good quality fruit and yields well in most conditions. The wines it
creates are medium bodied with the nose showing ripe cherry and red currant fruit, the palate delivering
medium tannins and medium length with good quality red fruits on the finish. A refreshing Pinot Noir clone.
114/115
Clones stemming from the Dijon region in France. These clones are both very similar and grow small tight bunches with thick skinned berries driving high fruit concentration. The wines have a nose of red currant, perfume and blue berries, while the palate has medium tannin structures with beautiful fruit driving the finish. A finessed Pinot Noir clone.
667
This clone also stems from the Dijon but have a tendency to grow larger berries and grenade like bunches in
very tight bunches. The vines are high yielding and grows fruit with high berry and currant flavors, somewhat red fruit salad like. The nose slightly perfumed with lots of red fruit flavors, the palate tight acidity with red currants and black berries finishing with good acid to fruit balance. A Pinot Noir clone with great blending attributes.
Abel
This clone is somewhat of a mystery one with its roots stemming from New Zealand with the source potentially being the famous La Tache vineyard in Burgundy. Vigorous grower with large bunches and plumb berries. Medium bodied wines with high fruit concentration, red plum and cherries on the nose with red fruit and medium tannins on the palate. A good Pinot Noir clone with exceptional roots.
MV6
A clone with French roots from the Burgundy region. Good grower and small bunches with thick skins and high tannin profiles. The nose of these wines is more traditional Pinot and shows red cherry, slight earthy and herbaceous notes. The palate is more refined and carries high natural tannin structure with a long finish. A hearty Pinot Noir clone.
