96 / 100"Lubiana's flagship pinot noir delivers the goods. Great aromatic depth revealing plush wild strawberry, dark cherry and red plum fruits dredged in exotic spice with hints of roasting game, mountain herbs, sous bois, Chinese barbecue and earth. Tight, grainy tannins provide the frame and a seam of minerally acidity the propulsion as the wine flows across the palate, finishing very long and true. A complex wine that delivers beautiful drinking now but will repay careful cellaring handsomely. Serious stuff."

"It’s really concentrated and powerful, is the take away message. Deep, dark cherry inflections, black plum, green olive, quite a bit of clove and cinnamon spice, turned earth, truffle and aniseed going on. Very fragrant, lots of flavour, quite compact despite the potency and a sheath of grippy, minerally tannins deliver a chew and chomp while trimming things down. Very impressive. A distinct pinot noir."

Tasting Notes
Sasso translates to ‘stone’ in Italian, the name chosen for this wine due to the stoney and gravelly soils of our estate vineyard. The soil types of the blocks that create our Sasso consist of Terra Rossa soil with deep red clay, cracking black clay base over patches of chalky limestone and grey silty gravel over porous gravelly clay. Our estate vineyard is planted at a varied elevation, ranging from 35 to 120 metres and the vines range from 15 to 30 years old. We maintain low yields of less than 4 tonnes per hectare.
Hand-picked grapes are processed immediately. The fruit undergoes wild fermentation in open top fermenters with a mixture of whole bunch (25%) and destemmed fruit. After fermentation the ferments are pressed first and then gravity fed to second and third fill 225L French oak barriques in our underground cellar. The wine matures in these conditions until it is transferred to tank a month prior to bottling. Bottled in June 2023 our Sasso Pinot Noir is matured in bottle
