Tasting Notes
Baettig is the family project of winemaker Francisco "Pancho" Baettig (Errázuriz) and Carlos de Carlos in Traiguén, some 600 kilometers south of Chile. They planted 15.4 hectares of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir on volcanic soils in 2013 and the first wines are hitting the Ontario market for the first time now.
This Selección de Parcelas was made with Pinot Noir grapes grown in Malleco, in the appellation of Traiguén. Malleco is a land of wild forests, beautiful lakes, active volcanoes and abundant rain in the southern Chilean region of La Araucanía. The ancient volcanic soils of this area are composed of pyroclastic volcanic breccia of andesite lava, with clay/loam texture. The abundant rainfall throughout the year allows Baettig to practice a dry-farming viticulture.
The Pinot Noir comes exclusively from a selection of the Traiguén and Llaima parcels, which deliver elegant and austere wines with strong ageing potential. The name Los Primos (The Cousins), refers to the closeness of style and quality of the vineyard parcels that give rise to this wine.
Pouring ruby red in the glass, this Pinot showcases refined aromas of fresh cherries and wild strawberries, with a lively bouquet of rose hip, lavender and notes of spiced orange peel and dried herbs. The palate is equally as complex, with red berry fruits supported by juicy acidity and firm but approachable tannins. Flavours of graphite unfold on the lengthy finish, owing the volcanic soils the grapes were grown in. With its deep flavours and great structure, this wine will award cellaring-if you can be patient!
Being that Pinot Noir produces such a food-friendly wines, pairing options are endless. We recommend trying this with a mushroom-stuffed pork roulade or braised beef.
