94 / 100

"I look forward to tasting Great Southern shiraz ahead of cabernet but this 2012 cabernet release of Scotsdale certainly streets the shiraz. This is excellent. A ripper. So fine. Pure and dark of fruit but clear, measured, balanced, just right. Olives, earth, mineral, blackcurrant, rust-like notes, crushed leaves. Feels intricately woven. Length to match"

"Dense, almost chewy Cabernet with classic blackberry, mint, green olive and cedar flavours. Firmly structured red that needs time to moderate the tannins and allow access to its full menu of flavours. The wine is clearly complex but requires patience"

92 / 100

"Very fine and stylish with a sweet oaky perfume of violets cassis mulberries dark plums and red flowers backed by dusty herbal notes Its long pristine and deeply flavoured with a lingering presence of small black and red berries tightly knit with cedarvanilla oak and framed by fine chalky tannins It will age well"
- Jeremy Oliver

Tasting Notes

The Howard Park Scotsdale wines carry the Howard Park label and therefore are sourced from only the highest regarded vineyards and are given extraordinary attention in the vineyard. Canopy management is designed to maximize fruit exposure to the sunlight and yields are low to achieve concentration in the grapes. The grapes are harvested according to flavour with little regard for analytical data, fermentation occurs in static stainless steel tanks with highly aerative pumpovers that are integral in tannin development. At completion of fermentation the Shiraz is pressed off into French oak barriques of which about 60% are new, the balance being 1 year old. The wine was matured in barrel for approximately 18 months. There was minimal fining and filtration performed.
