"Just bottled prior to this tasting and brought up in 50% new oak, the 2022 Saint Joseph Lieu-Dit Saint Joseph Blanc has a ripe, medium to full-bodied, concentrated profile that has so much to love. Grilled peach, toasted almonds, and orange marmalade are just some of its nuances, and this beauty has ample mid-palate depth, beautiful balance, and a great finish."

"A round, fruity and aromatic blend of 95% marsanne and 5% roussanne. Aromas of green pears, blanched almonds, white flowers and a touch of vanilla. It's medium-bodied with a fresh and creamy core of stone fruit and a comforting character throughout. Good energy and verve, with a delicate touch on the palate. Aromatic finish. Drink or hold."
- James Suckling

92 / 100

"The 2022 Saint-Joseph Blanc Lieu-Dit outperforms the 2020 and 2021. Fragrant spring blossom, white peach, yellow apple and lemon flesh are framed by a light touch of oak. Hitting the palate with solid flavor concentration neatly balanced by fresh acidity, the 2022 Saint-Joseph Blanc Lieu-Dit ends with persistence on the elegant finish."

Tasting Notes

Introduction to E. Guigal

The Guigal domain was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in Ampuis; a small, ancient village at the heart of the Côte-Rôtie appellation. It is overlooked by unique vineyards where vines and wine have been celebrated for over 2,400 years. Following his arrival in 1924 at the age of 14, the founder went on to make wine for 67 vintages in the Côte-Rôtie and, at the beginning of his career, took part in the development of the Vidal-Fleury establishment.

In 1961, a still very young Marcel Guigal took over management of the domain when his father was struck by temporary but total blindness. He was joined in 1973 by his wife, Bernadette and they worked hand-in-hand to expand the family business. In 1975, their son Philippe was born and today he is the domain’s oenologist. Together with his wife, Eve, he represents the third generation and continues the family’s lifetime endeavour to be at the service of the greatest wines of the Rhône valley.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: A bright, pale gold hue with shimmering green highlights, this wine reflects its youthful vibrancy and refined character.

Nose: The nose is elegant and layered, offering aromas of white flowers like honeysuckle and acacia, intertwined with ripe stone fruits such as peach and apricot. Subtle notes of citrus zest—lemon and mandarin—add freshness, while hints of almond, hazelnut, and wet stone reveal its mineral undertones.

Palate: On the palate, this Saint-Joseph Blanc is rich yet beautifully balanced. Flavours of pear, yellow apple, and juicy nectarine dominate, supported by a creamy texture. Mid-palate reveals a harmonious integration of oak, imparting nuances of vanilla, toasted brioche, and a touch of spice. A vibrant acidity underpins the wine, maintaining freshness and enhancing its complexity.

Finish: The finish is long and refined, leaving lingering impressions of citrus, white peach, and a delicate almond nuttiness. A subtle saline quality and mineral streak give the wine a sense of place, highlighting its Rhône Valley terroir.

Overall: Guigal Saint-Joseph Lieu-Dit Saint-Joseph Blanc 2022 is a sophisticated and expressive white wine, ideal for those who appreciate depth and elegance. Perfect as an accompaniment to creamy seafood dishes, roasted poultry, or aged cheeses, this wine’s balance of richness and freshness makes it a standout in any setting.
