Scores

95 / 100

"This has intense blackberry aromas and some gently tarry notes, still looking very youthful. The palate has a wealth of ripe, sweet red-plum and dark-berry flavor and plenty of blackberries, some pastry and light spice, too. Really impressive freshness and depth, as well as layered, fine tannins. Drink or hold."
- James Suckling

96 / 100

"Full burnished red colour, brick-red edges. Lovely complex, mellow old shiraz bouquet, with some spices. The palate is sweetly ripe and rich, firmly structured and long, with a good solid backbone. Tight, compact, intense and lingering. Impressive wine, and delicious drinking."
- Huon Hooke

Tasting Notes

Jim Barry wines are the winner of James Halliday's Wine Companion 'WINERY OF THE YEAR' 2019. The name of ‘Armagh’ was bestowed by the original Irish settlers who arrived in 1849, and named the lush rolling hills after their homeland.

The Armagh vineyard was planted by Jim Barry in 1968. The vines follow the contours of the north-west-facing slopes, catching the winter rain and summer sun from many angles. The unique soil composition is sandy clay topsoil with a pebbly alluvial layer overlaying mottled clay subsoil. Plush fruit and supple richness are hallmarks of The Armagh style. With oak behind deep, intense fruit and fine, structured tannins, The Armagh is highly prized for its consistency and cellaring potential. From the first vintage in 1985, The Armagh has achieved remarkable success, attaining the maximum possible rating of ‘Exceptional’ in Langton’s Classification of Australian Wine.

This wine displays crimson red with a magenta hue in the glass. The nose shows intense, fragrant aromas of ripe black fruits, figs, apricot and wet stone with graphite notes. The palate opens with wet stone, ripe berries, coiled tannins and graphite. As the wine opens and relaxes it shows more black fruits and oak, laced with wet stone. A wine of enormous complexity and longevity.
