"Coming from a small (two-hectare) single vineyard with more than 120-year-old vines in the Flaxman Valley area of Barossa’s cooler Eden Valley, the 2015 Steinert Shiraz offers a deep garnet-purple color and very pretty red currants, black cherries and black raspberries notes, with touches of pepper and spice box plus fleeting wafts of roses. The medium to full-bodied palate is seriously intense, delivering ripe red berry and spice layers with a very long, perfumed finish. 200 cases were made. Drink 2018-2038."

"This vineyard really is one of those ‘crown jewel’ kind of sites, or so it feels. And Flaxman’s Valley is just about, for me, the most interesting part of the Barossa/Eden Valley for grape growing – certainly a wonderful spectrum of wines from the parish, in styles that are typically (cooler, refined, red fruits, herb) more up my alley. The grapes are picked from 120-year-old vines at 470 metres above sea level. There’s a grace to this release that came unexpected. That’s a multi-punch combo in bouquet. Graphite mineral character rides above red berry fruit, whiffs of alpine herbs, mahogany oak character, sweet spice and a sweet earthy character. Beguiling. Svelte in the palate and holds a restraint and coolness even with deep, dark concentration of flavour apparent. Washes over the senses with a flourish of sweet fruit, faint green herbs, spicy oak, black olive, game meat and dark fruits, with limber tannin spreading in a web. Generous, gentle giant of a wine with everything tucked away. This is done very well."

Tasting Notes

Superb colour saturation possessing a dense inky black core with a deep bright dark red black hue. Intense yet still somewhat restrained aromatics of ripe black cherries, liquorice, blackberries and dark plum rise from the glass followed by toasty vanillin cedar, hints of mocha and spicy scorched earth. Rich, powerful and opulently textured yet retaining a sense of freshness the palate is blessed with luscious black fruits including blackberries, liquorice and black cherries over some dark plum, vanillin cedar, scorched earth and spice. The hefty fruit cascading over a sturdy tannin and vibrant acid framework. Long powerful aftertaste of dark plums, blackberries, liquorice, vanillin cedar and spice.
