96 / 100"The 2016 Syrah Domaine Des Chirats is a more backward wine that just exudes a sense minerality and a liqueur of rocks like character. Deep purple-colored with an awesome nose of bloody blue fruits, ground pepper, graphite, and violets, it builds incrementally on the palate with full-bodied richness, ultra-fine tannins, and an incredible sense of purity and precision. This isn't a blockbuster yet seems to have one foot in the Rhone Valley and one foot in Sonoma. It's going to benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age and cruise for 15+ years or more. Drink 2022-2037"

Tasting Notes
The Domaine Des Chirats Syrah comes from the Rockpile vineyard in Sonoma. It is a collaboration two master winemakers, Yves Cuilleron from France’s Northern Rhône and Californian superstar Jeff Cohn. Jeff began working with the sustainably farmed Rockpile Vineyard over fourteen years ago. At 2010 ft. elevation, the vineyard sites that are sourced from are rocky, and stressed. This gives amazing fruit to make the Rockpile Vineyard Syrah. With three clones of Syrah: Entav 470, Serine, and Chapoutier selections planted amongst the vineyards, the wine is able to reach different depths and profiles. Elevation above the fog line, steep, rocky hills and average temperatures from 50-80˚ provide a wonderful growing season, allowing for full ripening. Soils from clay, loam, to granite quartz provide the wines with a strong mineral component. That along with the native yeast that Jeff isolated from Rockpile many years ago provides character that is uniquely Rockpile. This wine is made from 20yr old vines grown from Chapoutier clones that made their way to California via a suitcase. It is 100% Syrah aged in about 30% new French oak with about 30% whole clusters during the fermentation.
