Scores

96 / 100

"The 2010 Barolo Margheria comes across as quite compact at this stage but then again, it is a young Serralunga Barolo. Iron, graphite, smoke and crushed rocks seem to resonate off a core of expressive dark fruit in a muscular, implosive Barolo endowed with tremendous depth and intensity. With time in the glass the wine's inner perfume and sweetness begin to emerge, accompanied by expressive floral and savory notes that add tons of pure appeal. The 2010 is going to require considerable patience, but there is a lot to look forward to. Layers of chalk and limestone inflected minerality support to the building finish."

"This is a dense and powerful Barolo with so much fruit and tannin tension yet there is a balance and refinement with dried berries, flowers and mineral character. Full body, with chewy tannins and a long finish. Muscular wine for Azelia. Best ever from this vineyard?"

"A single-vineyard expression from Serralunga d'Alba, the 2010 Barolo Margheria is a wine of enormous dimension and depth. Malolactic fermentation is not started with increased temperatures. Instead, the wine is placed in large oak casks and secondary fermentation occurs in a fully natural manner when the conditions are right. This represents a return to local tradition, and this process helps to safeguard the authenticity of those delicate Nebbiolo aromas. You get wild berries and blue flower with licorice and smoke at the back. Drink through 2035."

"Round in profile, with base notes of plum, leather and tar to balance the higher-toned flavors of cherry, flowers and white pepper. Firm and lean on the finish now, with a mouthwatering aftertaste that echoes fruit and spice details. Great length. Best from 2018 through 2033."

Tasting Notes

Azelia is a 40-acre estate in Castiglione Falletto, in Langhe. It dates to 1920 when Lorenzo Scavino began making wine from the family vineyards. Today the fifth generation of the Scavino family owns and operates the estate, which produces about 80,000 bottles a year. Azelia is best known for its Barolos, which often earn 3 bicchieri, the highest ratings possible from Gambero Rosso, the Italian wine journal.
