Scores

92 / 100

"The 2020 Grand Village is a blend of 21% Cabernet Franc and 79% Merlot, matured in 30% new oak. It has a well-defined bouquet of pure black cherries, cassis, iris flower and touches of crushed stone, all very sophisticated. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins and fine backbone and salinity. Tightly wound with touches of brine toward the vivid finish. One of the best Grand Village vintages that I have encountered from barrel."

"Sinewy, saline, finely-boned and full of peony florals and supple raspberry fruits. You are not getting the typical Bordeaux wine, it has a serious feel and is even a little bit aloof at this point. Dark fruits, tobacco leaf and flowers - you see the sculpting hand of the winemakers, teasing out the clay-limestone freshness from the soils. An unmissable value wine in the vintage. No frost here in 2021. All the Bouchet (Cabernet Franc) at Grand Village is from massal selection at this point. Drinking Window 2023 - 2034."

Tasting Notes

Given they are under the same ownership of the Guinaudau family, Chateau Grand Village is often referred to as Chateau Lafleur’s second vineyard. The estate has been owned by the Guinaudau’s relatives for hundreds of years, however it was not until the year 2000 that they began to produce wine themselves from the property. Situated on the edge of the Fronsac region and classified as Bordeaux Superieur, the vineyard is planted to 79% Merlot and 21% Bouchets (Cabernet Franc). The terroir is similar to Saint Emilion with its mix of calcisol going down a foot or so to a bedrock mostly made up of asteria limestone. At Grand Village, they practice many of the same techniques employed at Lafleur, including pruning and de-budding adapted to each vine plant, crop thinning in summer and de-leafing. The grapes are picked by hand, followed by very careful sorting and selection.
