Tasting Notes
With origins dating back to the 18th century, Château Gruaud Larose has long been recognised for producing wines that embody the traditional strength and elegance of Saint-Julien. The 2005 vintage, regarded as one of the finest in recent years, saw perfect growing conditions that allowed the estate’s Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend to thrive. The wine presents a powerful bouquet of ripe dark fruit, earthy notes, and hints of spice, with well-integrated tannins that provide structure and longevity. Now fully matured, it offers a remarkable expression of this Second Growth, making it a perfect choice for collectors looking to experience Gruaud Larose at its peak.

"This tastes of great Cabernet Sauvignon, with its black currant, cedar and herbs and fresh, juicy acidity. It is as fresh as it is rich, but it has a structure of dense tannins that balances the wine. This is one of the best wines from Gruaud-Larose for several years. (Tasted: Jan 2008)"

"Strong ruby, still few tones of age. The nose is deep, complex, seems more "Tuscan" than the 2000, which was significantly cooler, Christmas spices, balsamic notes, dark berries, pomegranate. The palate is accessible, clearly shows structure, the balance of fruit, acidity and tannin is right, still seems quite wild and youthful, can definitely mature, but doesn't have the charm of the 2000s. Now (decant) until 2040 (tasted on March 25, 2023 as part of the Gruaud Larose tasting with Ruedi & Silvia Hintermann)"

"Fabulous, enticing nose with such a dark-hued pool of bramble and black plum, with some herbal and olive edges and a lovely sense of depth and intensity. The palate is tight and youthful of course, the oak adding a creaminess and the tannins steely. Beneath there is a fine quality and depth to the fruit, this has energy and vitality, with a real juiciness in the finish. A wine with real potential to score higher than its current."
