Tasting Notes
Brothers David and Nicolas Rossignol run this 100% Organic and Biodynamically farmed Domaine located in the very heart of Gevrey Chambertin. Very early to the Sustainable farming movement, all the family's vineyards, located in some of the most impressive vineyards in Burgundy, were converted to Certified Organic in 2004.
The Rossignols bought this parcel in 1997 and the vines are now about 50 years old. The Rossignol-Trapet 0.35 hectare parcel is in the triangle that protrudes in between Griotte and Charmes. They are village vines rubbing shoulders with Grands Crus.
This is the only parcel the domaine bottles separately from the other Gevrey village parcels. That is thanks to its quite incredible situation, and the consistency of quality it delivers every year. It is sandwiched just between grands crus Charmes-Chambertin and Griotte-Chambertin. It’s almost unbelievable it’s only a village lieu-dit. The Rossignol-Trapet vines lie right alongside the Joseph Roty Charmes Vieilles Vignes parcel, but the soil is more like Griotte-Chambertin just to the north. There is just a hint of black fruit depth combined with the red fruit freshness, something reminiscent of cassis and cherries. The tannins are well-formed, offering structure and frame with a slight broodiness, but not imposing too heavily on the fruit. Very fine.

Scores
91 / 100"Clean lively purple colour. A fresh and relatively vigorous fruit on the nose, cherry and a more precise strawberry. Crisper finish too, more linear but fine. The very stony nature of the soil shows through in this wine."

"Here the whole cluster vinification is more evident as there are prominent floral elements adding breadth and a touch of elegance to the spicy essence of red cherries and soft earth. The sleeker and more finely textured medium-bodied flavors possess a succulent, even caressing, mid-palate that contrasts mildly with the bitter pit fruit-inflected and youthfully austere finale."

"Less expressive than the Vielles Vignes with a richer, darker fruit character although the overall impression is still at the red end of the spectrum. At this stage there’s impressive volume, fruit density and spice on the mid-palate but it’s yet to unfurl on the finish. Tannins are firm and earthy, and the potential is all there, but for now it’s all bunched up in the middle."
- Matthew Hemming MW
