Tasting Notes

Introduction to Frapin

Frapin is located in the centre of the Grande Champagne Premier Cru du Cognac region in the sleepy little town of Segonzac, the finest designated region in Cognac. It is the only merchant located in the town and only sells Cognacs produced from grapes sourced from its own 778 acre estate in the heart of the Grande Champagne region.

The Frapin family have been winegrowers since 1270 and mostly sold their Cognacs to Remy Martin, Hennessy, Courvoisier and other houses until the 1980's. Since 1984, when the Cointreau family took over what was then a forgotten brand, it has been selling increasing quantities of brandies. These brandies have been kept in new wood for longer than their competitors, so confident are they with the quality of it's brandies , the size of its stocks represent 18 years of sales (an amount of 2 to 3 times the quantity of the stocks held by its competitors).

Frapin keeps its best cognacs in new oak for up to 2 and a half years, depending on the amount of colour (and therefore tannin) the spirit has absorbed.

Tasting Notes

Coming from a unique vineyard spanning over 240 hectares in the heart of Grande Champagne, Premier Cru of Cognac, this '15 years old' blend is 100% the expression of the terroir and the spirit of the House.

Harvesting, distillation, and aging are all carried out at the estate. As the only XO Frapin to offer a blend of cognacs from both humid and dry cellars, it bridges these two worlds of slow maturation, gaining roundness and smoothness from one, while borrowing finesse and elegance from the other.

Nervous, lively, and bright, cheerful and charming, this Frapin '15 years old' Cognac is adorned with a beautiful golden robe, with summer reflections. On the nose, it reveals woody, fresh, and vanilla notes, mingled with tea and dried flowers.

"On the palate, the '15 years old' reveals itself as immediately complex. The aromas of wood and vanilla respond to notes of dried fruits and toasted bread. The spicy finish lingers on beautifully. This XO cognac 'Brut de fût' transitions directly from barrel to bottle without undergoing any transformation, its high proof of 45.3 bringing strength and complexity. To preserve its aromatic richness and gustatory integrity, this cognac is not cold-filtered. This originality guarantees aromatic richness." Patrice Piveteau, Master Cellar.
