"Medium red purple. Smoky, guaiacol and slightly sweaty - it's a bit reductive. Liberal use of new oak, and possibly some wholebunch ferment character. Lovely rich, fleshy, complex, deep palate. Lots of toasty smoky oak for sure, and evidence of barrel ferment, but it's also deep in fruit and is succulent and seductive. Lush, deep and ample: an impressive effort."

"Don’t laugh but in many ways this wine reminded me of a village level Rousseau (and like the Highlander there can be only one). There I said it. Those who taste the wine will probably understand what I am driving at. Perhaps it’s as much a concept (or philosophy) as a reality anyway. Sparkling crimson red with a mix of red cherry and strawberry, spice, a little vanilla oak, mineral and a slight gaminess. On the palate light to medium bodied with pure red fruit, spice and little stalk. It has impressive clarity and definition with supple fine grained tannin and bright jumpy acidity – finely balanced and displaying a high degree of Pinosity. Good long fresh finish. Vibrant and fine boned – it’s a delicious wine of considerable grace and finesse."

Tasting Notes

Stepping back in time to 2006, the vintage shaped up as another high quality year but with only average yields in Eden Valley and the Adelaide Hills. After a late break in mid-June last year, winter and spring rains were some of the best for years in the lead-up to flowering in early summer. The vines were vigorous and lush at first but slowly underwent mild stress during berry development, helping to keep the berry size small. Brief heat waves occurred in late January and mid-February but were early enough not to affect quality, with only minor sunburn on exposed fruit. After a warmer than usual spell in late March and with the weather firing up again, picking continued with shiraz from Hill of Grace, Mount Edelstone and Eden Valley and pinot noir from Lenswood.
