Tasting Notes
Hobbs’ magnificent block of gnarled old vines, planted in 1905 are low yielding and produce fruit of the highest quality. Some of the Barossa’s oldest Shiraz, these vines have stood the test of time, consistently providing fruit with complexity and distinct varietal characteristics. The vines are hand pruned and the fruit is handpicked. Vines as precious as these deserve to be hand tended, and they receive all the love and care needed to produce wines built for the long haul.

An elegant wine with tremendous levels of concentration and flavour ripe raspberries, dark red berries, warm cedar with a hint of vanilla and a spicy, peppery undertone.

97 / 100"Powerful and graceful at once, the wine combines stunning fruit purity with seductive complexity, showing black and purple fruit richness, cedar, toasted spice and mocha characters on the nose, leading to superbly weighted palate offering delectable flavours with velvety texture, finishing impressively long and gratifying. It's dense and opulent, while remaining harmonious and structured with an awesome line and length. At its best: 2025 to 2041. $170.00."

"The 1905 plantings of shiraz on the Hobbs estate in Flaxman Valley have delivered in the excellent 2021 vintage. It's a concentrated, intense wine, packed full of pitch-perfect macerated plum, blackberry and black cherry fruits. Hints of cedar, vanillin oak, fruitcake spice, sage, chocolate bullets and roasting meats too, but it is that plush fruit that is the star. The tannins are granitic and fine, there is freshness within and the length of flavour is superb. An excellent release for the Hobbsys. It'll cellar like a champ too."

"From vines which were planted, and this will come as no surprise, in 1905. Only 250 dozen produced. This is seriously good. A monumentally impressive Barossa Shiraz. Terrific vintage, ancient vines, finely crafted – this has everything in place for a couple of decades of pleasure. It is immediately apparent that, even in these early days, there is already complexity emerging, and great intensity. Notes of blackberries, aniseed, leather, tobacco leaves, chocolate, coffee beans and cloves. There is a good ten to twenty years here and despite the powerful palate, the wine is finely balanced. There are soft, fine tannins, but loads of them. Rich and long in style, and more than a bit special."

"The 2021 1905 Shiraz is classically dense and earthy, with raspberry pip, dark chocolate/cocoa, coffee grounds, dried orange peel, cracked black pepper, crushed quartz and black tea, with all of it framed by well-matched sweet oak. The whole package is really quite delicious. I must admit to not drinking wines like this myself—mainly due to the alcohol, which is 15.4% in this case—but I will be open about my excitement in tasting wines that are this good, no matter the style. And I am extraordinarily partial to the Eden Valley. This wine is well made and classy, all elements in balance with one another. The length of flavor, well, I can still taste that from the very first sip that I took. It's beyond impressive, a high-octane wine but eminently well judged. A wine from the place. Sealed under Diam and wax."
