"The 2017 Pommard “Pézerolles” from Domaine Lafarge is another wonderfully red fruity wine in the cellars this year. The bouquet wafts from the glass in a refined blend of strawberries, red plums, raw cocoa, pigeon, a very complex base of soil, vanillin oak and a floral topnote redolent of roses. On the palate the wine is elegant, pure and very much defined by its soil, with a great core of sappy fruit, ripe, seamless tannins and outstanding precision and grip on the refined, pure and nascently complex finish. This is a very, very elegant Pommard."

"A very fresh and restrained blend of red and blue fruit is liberally sprinkled with spice and floral notes and in particular violet. There is good volume and solid mid-palate density to the seductively textured middle weight and overtly stony flavors that are shaped by refined tannins on the beautifully complex and sneaky long finish. Textbook Pézerolles."

"The 2017 Pommard Les Pezerolles 1er Cru offers a mixture of red and blue fruit, quite Volnay-like on the nose, touches of violet developing in the glass with aeration. The palate is well balanced with sappy tannin, rather powerful but elegant, hints of pain d’epices towards the feminine finish. Very long and tempting."

Tasting Notes

Based in Côte de Beaune's Volnay, Michel and Frédéric Lafarge are Domaine Lafarge’s renowned father and son team.

Michel worked with his father from 1949, with Frédéric starting in 1978. As of 2018, they have been joined by the next generation, Clothilde Lafarge, daughter of Frédéric and Chantal. The domaine traces its history back to the early 19th century, the iconic Clos du Château des Ducs having been bought in 1900 by Michel Lafarge’s father. The first wines bottled at the domaine in 1934 included Clos des Chênes, the domaine’s largest Volnay premier cru holding and one of the village’s flagships.

Red wines are 100% destemmed. Michel and Frédéric converted to biodynamic viticulture in 1996 and the domaine is now at the forefront of the movement. There is nothing showy here, as a visit to the mould-covered cellars will confirm. The wines are pure, age-worthy and yet quite beautifully delicate.
