96 / 100"Sees 14 months in French oak hogsheads (67% new, 29% 1-year-old). The Penfolds RWT (Red Wine Trial) release is a sleek, polished rendition of Barossa Valley shiraz. Solid magenta/crimson in the glass with plush satsuma plum, blueberry and mulberry fruit notes. Hints of spice, dark chocolate, espresso, violets, licorice and earth. There's a plushness to the fruit as it hangs tautly off its canvas of fine-grained tannin, and a sense of detail that conveys opulence and elegance at once, trailing slowly with fine, Barossan style."

"Matured 14 months in 67% new French oak hogsheads There is a coiled depth to the black fruits, liquorice and high cocoa dark chocolate of Barossa shiraz, confidently set to a rigid framework of French oak tannin confidence. I love the way the cool nights of 2022 season infuse definition and character to the expansive depth that proclaims Barossa! One for the cellar."

"Glass staining dense purple colour; walnut, clove, nutmeg, pepper and dark fruits on the nose, very deep and concentrated in the mouth, with assorted black fruits and bitumen on palate, and lashings of powdery but mouth-coating and insistent tannins. A big and strongly built shiraz for the long haul. (14 months in French oak hogsheads, 67% new) 03 JUL 2024"

"One suspects that future generations of winelovers will endlessly debate the glories, and their preferences, of the 2021 and 2022 vintages. Two truly superb years. Too early to make a definitive call as to whether the 2021 or the 2022 vintage of RWT is the superior wine, but what we can say with some degree of conviction is that these two vintages are surely the best pair of wines ever released under this label. Fourteen months maturation in French oak hogsheads, 67% new, Penfolds describe the colour of this wine as Barossa Noir. There is elegance here, impressively so, especially for Barossa Shiraz. A wine of grace. The vestiges of quality oak are concluding integration and the wine has aromas of coffee beans, vanilla, plums, licorice, blackcurrants and cassis. The structure is impressive and even hints at a touch of formality and austerity. This vintage relies a little more on black fruits than we usually see with RWT. Time in the glass sees the wine offer bay leaves, axle grease and spices. There is also juicy acidity, sleek tannins and superb length, contributing to a brilliant RWT, which has at least twenty years ahead of it."

"It’s now also, of course, known as Bin 798. It’s Barossa Valley Shiraz, matured in French oak for 14 months, 67% new. Sweet tannin. A sweet ride of flavour, and then sweet tannin. It’s up front with plum, redcurrant, blueberry and musk, peppercorn characters hovering, but the smoky, cedary, musky inputs go up a gear as the tannin kicks in. There’s a fair amount of flavour upfront but it feels back-ended once it’s concluded. That’s never a bad thing. This is both bold and beautiful."
