97 / 100"Only 0.8ha of the original, larger, vineyard planted in 1880 remain; the dry-grown 130-year-old vines produce this deeply coloured wine, showing little or no sign of development, the palate reflecting the bouquet, with a tightly woven stream of black fruits, pepper, licorice and bramble; the balance, line and length are perfect, and the good quality, precisely inserted cork should allow this wine to cruise through many decades to come."

Tasting Notes
Grape growing and winemaking have been a part of Poonawatta’s farming history since the first vines were planted in 1880. That same shiraz vineyard continues to deliver its precious harvest each season. The estate-grown and single-vineyard wines are a journey of discovery across Eden Valley’s patchwork of small vineyards, each wine telling of site and season, and our passion to craft the very best from each vintage. Family-owned, with a six-generation Eden Valley heritage, our approach to farming is custodial, respecting the history of Indigenous and European generations past, and protecting, nurturing and improving the land for generations to come. Poonawatta takes its name from the Peramangk language: 'poona' meaning 'good' and 'watta' meaning 'country'. Good country – credentials that sit well with the regenerative farming approach taken on the Poonawatta property.
