96 / 100"Superb depth and freshness, with black olives, mussel shells, tea leaves and a touch of cocoa powder. Full- bodied but really fresh and powerful, with tons of grape-skin tannins that remind me of Barolo--austere, almost a bit rustic, but so fresh. Extremely long and firm. Unique freshness and structure. Cabernet sauvignon grafted onto 100-year-old pais 60 years ago. Granitic soils. Dry-farmed. It spent 15 months aging in French oak barrels. Very low ph of 3.38. Drink from 2025."

"The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon hails from a vineyard containing 80-year-old Pais vines grafted with Cabernet Sauvignon on Coronel de Maule. Purple with a ruby sheen in glass. The expressive nose offer fresh blackcurrent and plum with hints of spice and gentle cigar box aromas. Delicate and energetic in the mouth with refined tannins. The juicy mouth-watering palate is full of flavour."

"I also tasted the very young 2022 Vino de Viñedo Los Compadres Cabernet Sauvignon, which has a majority of grapes from a vineyard they finally purchased in Coronel de Maule that has 60-year-old head-pruned, dry-farmed and ungrafted Cabernet Sauvignon, a rarity for the variety, because it was grafted onto 100-year-old País vines. It has 13.8% alcohol with a pH of 3.35, which is extremely low, and very high acidity, 7.12. They used 15% new oak, and part of the wine fermented in barrel. It has the structured tannins from Maule but with amazing tension, lots of fruit, some notes of tobacco and tea leaves, textbook blackcurrant and with balsamic and minty, subtle, juicy, very good complexity, harmony and elegance with grip, serious and a little à la Saint-Estéphe. 17,000 bottles produced. A single-plot selection of Cabernet Sauvignon from the Coronel de Maule Vineyard will be released later, as it's not yet bottled."

"The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Los Padrinos originates from an old País vineyard in Coronel de Maule that was grafted with Cabernet 60 years ago. Aged for 15 months in French oak barrels, this black-fruited wine reveals balsamic aromas layered over notes of menthol and cassis. Dry, taut and compact, it presents a contrast between richness and tension, showcasing concentrated flavors and a fine-grained tannin texture. This is one worth keeping an eye on. Drinking window: 2026 - 2038."

Tasting Notes
Baettig is the family project of winemaker Francisco "Pancho" Baettig (Errázuriz) and Carlos de Carlos in Traiguén, some 600 kilometers south of Chile. They planted 15.4 hectares of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir on volcanic soils in 2013.
Maule Valley was one of the first areas in Chile to be planted to vine, and its viticultural history stretches back to the start of colonisation by the Spanish. The region has long been one of Chile's most successful bulk-production wine districts, as evidenced by the large amount of Pais still found planted here.
This Selección de Parcelas was made with Cabernet Sauvignon grapes grown in Maule, in the appellation of Central Valley. Mauleis a land of wild forests, beautiful lakes, active volcanoes and abundant rain. The ancient volcanic soils of this area are composed of pyroclastic volcanic breccia of andesite lava, with clay/loam texture. The abundant rainfall throughout the year allows Baettig to practice a dry-farming viticulture.
