97 / 100"Deep, dark red colour with a good purple tint. The bouquet is fresh and clean, bright and vital, with stacks of vibrant primary fruit still evident. The tannins are youthfully firm, and the wine has amazing concentration, power and depth. A wholly impressive wine. Outstanding."

"Elegant, finely crafted and long-living, with a bright, violet-like perfume of cassis, dark plums, mulberries and fresh, slightly smoky cedar/vanilla oak backed by a hint of underbrush. Underpinned by a willowy spine of smooth, pliant tannins, it presents a lingering core of intense black and blue berries and plums tightly knit with fine-grained oak. Very stylish and complete."

"It’s a bit like the 1996 in style I’d suggest in that it’s firm and has structure over fruit volume. That’s a vintage some love (me) and others don’t so much. Blackcurrant, strong menthol character, tobacco and pencil. It’s firm and muscular with the graphite-like tannin that’s typical of many from this vintage dominating the palate. Controlled and strict, but with ample fruit, it’s a long way away from the round ball of mid-palate fruit that so many Coonawarra Cabs show. Here’s a serious wine that will need decades to unwind. Does have a lack of flesh on the mid-palate (as per CM) but I suspect it’s just buried under the all the scaffolding at present, waiting to be revealed. Difficult wine to rate in some respects. I could give it 91+ or 93+ – reckon it will be good with time. Perhaps a classic. Something like Bordeaux for structure here. Let’s go with 93+ and drink from 2020-2040."

Tasting Notes
Matured for 16 months in a mixture of new & older French barriques & hogsheads. A deep wine with vibrant purple hues. Black cherry, blackberry & brambly aromas entwine with dark spices & tobacco. Fragrant, bright and pure, with blackcurrant, coffee and violet notes. A core of dark fruit runs through the palate, defining this as a powerful expression of ripe Cabernet Sauvignon. Supple tannins coat the palate & frame all the elements to create a focused, elegant and classic Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon.
