"1927 Vines is fine example of the amazing versatility of the Marsanne grape. It is probably its purest expression, capturing its essential beauty early and then allowing bottle age to bring complexity. From 2016 we see lovely florals emerging on the bouquet, showing signature honeysuckle, grilled grapefruit and almond development. Belies its age with a youthful energy and drive across the palate, lively acidity matched by a soft texture. By no means at its peak."

Tasting Notes

These limited release wines are produced from the Estate’s 1927 planted Marsanne vines – some of the oldest in the world. The fruit is harvested early at high natural acid levels. No chemicals are added and the juice then becomes fully oxidised. The clean juice is fermented at 11° to 15°C with the resultant wine ‘water’ white, flavourless and with high acid. The wine is bottled and then the magic happens. “It evolves into a wonderful, textural, mineral wine ... it’s a classic ugly duckling to beautiful swan story. The beauty of making the wine this way is that it develops in the bottle very slowly and has long term cellaring potential.” Alister Purbrick |Winemaker & 4th Generation Beginning with the first dedicated ‘1927 Vines’ Marsanne release from the 1998 vintage recognition of the impressive character and complexity of these wines continues to grow from both wine writers and critics through to Wine Show judges with the Trophy and Medal tally increasing year on year.

Enjoy Now to 2045+ Displaying all the elements of the remarkable pedigree of our ‘1927 Vines’ Marsanne releases, this 2016 vintage brings penetrating straw, ginger spice and citrus fruit aromas to a still evolving palate of nashi pear, grapefruit and honeysuckle notes. An energetic mineral acidity graces a clean and steely finish and will provide the supportive framework for greater complexity to come with extended cellaring.
