99 / 100"Coming from very old, dry farmed vines planted in a cooler part of the Barossa (Eden Valley), the 2016 Shiraz Steinert is a legendary wine in the making. This beauty boasts a deep ruby/purple-hued color as well as a cool-climate-like array of red and black currants, dried flowers, incense, salted meats, and exotic, peppery spices. Hitting the palate with full-bodied richness, this is a wine of incredible richness and depth paired with remarkable elegance and purity. With integrated acidity, a sensational texture, and a finish that won’t quit, this tour de force in Shiraz can be enjoyed today or cellared for two decades. Bravo!"

"Priced in the same ballpark as another Eden Valley Shiraz icon, the Powells' 2016 Steinert Shiraz deserves to be mentioned in that same class. Sourced from the cooler Flaxman Valley portion of the region from vines more than 120 years old, it boasts complex aromas of garrigue, baking spices, black cherries and raspberries. It's full-bodied, creamy-textured and rich, with echoes of red fruit and wet stone on the nearly endless finish."

Tasting Notes
The Steinert Shiraz is the epitome of the beauty and grace of the Eden Valley. It's perfume is beautifully complex, displaying dried herbs and spices, lifted florals, dark cherries, red currants, charcuterie meats and smoked wood. The palate is supple but refined, with a firm backbone of fine grained tannins providing the framework for a kaleidoscope of flavours. It sings with dark fruits accompanied by thyme, lavender, cedar and cloves, finishing with a crescendo of soft, powdery tannins.
Powell & Son wines are sourced from various vineyard sites throughout the Barossa and Eden Valleys. Callum and Dave Powell employ traditional, minimalist winemaking techniques to produce a wine that speaks of the place that it was grown. Their inspiration for winemaking having its roots in France’s Rhone Valley, Powell & Son red wines are made from the classic Rhone varietals: Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro and its whites: Roussanne, Marsanne as well as Eden Valley Riesling. The Powell philosophy is that a great wine is made in the vineyard and so Callum and Dave work the vineyards they use on their own in the Winter and Spring seasons, then in Autumn pick the fruit and vinify using old concrete ferment vats and basket pressing – producing unique and expressive wines from their most prized vineyards throughout the Barossa.
