"Grab a salumi platter, pretend you're in Tuscany and pour a glass. Yes, this sangiovese is that good. Combines the red cherry fruits, the earthy nuance, cumin herbals and almond skin with a touch of Campari-like bitters to produce a sangiovese impressively sturdy in tannin, compact and gently savoury. It's all here and more. - Jeni Port"

Tasting Notes

The 2023 Sangiovese is 95% Sangiovese. 5% Colorino. A portion of the grapes were de-stemmed to stain whole berries, while the balance were crushed. Fermentation took place in a mixture of stainless steel and oak vats using indigenous yeasts with the wine remaining on skins for a total of 28 days prior to pressing. The wine was then matured in predominately Italian-coopered large casks.

Savoury nuances of dried herbs and dark cherry combine to create a complex nose. Fine tannins and acidity combine with ripe fruit to produce a medium-full bodied palate with persistent flavour.
The 2023 Sangiovese is a medium bodied wine, savoury and textural, with a beautiful line of fine-grained tannins and acidity running through the palate. The wine delivers enticing aromas of sour cherry and plum, with nuances of dried herb.

The Vintage: The season leading up to the 2023 vintage was, in many ways very similar to the two which preceded it. The winter of 2022 was typified by wet conditions, which didn’t allow many frosts to occur which normally breaks the weather into fine sunny days with cold nights. Early spring was extremely wet, with budburst occurring as late as yet recorded. The 2023 wines are all excellent in quality. High natural acidities and high colour in reds. The cool summer conditions were optimum for flavour and colour development.

The Inspiration: incorporating a small portion of Colorino, and old Tuscan variety traditionally used in the production of Chianti, this wine was created to capture the essence of that style. The wine was made for immediate enjoyment, but like Chianti Classico, can be aged for a number of years to create greater complexity.
