"Welcome to the dark side of the 2022 vintage in Burgundy. It has all the spicy and savory complexity, plus the giant structure we expect from a grand cru. But this only comes from Santenay, where there are 1er crus, but even they don’t get taken seriously. And everything is swathed in a blanket of velvet that you just want to sink into. Then comes the giant finish that almost knocks you off your chair in the nicest possible way. Drink from release."

Tasting Notes

“La Maladière”, a climat close to the village of Chagny within the Santenay appellation, takes its name from the old French for hospital. These charitable establishments (including the famous Hospices de Beaune a few kilometres away) often received donations of vines. Within 1er Cru Maladière, Les Héritiers own just under 1ha of 50 year old Pinot Noir vines, on a steep, south-facing, stony limestone slope. As is the practice at Les Héritiers, vines are managed sustainably and harvesting is by hand, allowing sorting to take place directly in the vineyard. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, and ageing is 100% in oak casks (20% of which are new) for 16 months.

Garnet red with fragrant raspberry and cherry-scented fruit which is ripe and concentrated. The brilliant fruit-forward style is matched with some gamey Burgundian complexity married with a tight-knit but supple structure and classic Beaune acidity.

Pair with robust flavours - steak on the grill, roasted pheasant or a deep, rich, slow cooked casserole.
